Information for SFUSD Teachers

Do you know a student who:

  • Is passionate about their community?

  • Is interested in the health sciences?

  • Could benefit from a real-world collaborative learning environment?

San Francisco Health Investigators (SF HI) is a paid research program designed for San Francisco high school students currently in their sophomore year. SF HI students take on the role of researchers to investigate the awareness, knowledge, and attitudes about current health issues in their communities. SF HI seeks to empower participating students to positively affect health in their home communities, and will use their research outcomes to design targeted messaging campaigns to build awareness, counter misconceptions, and inform health behaviors.

Program Overview

  • Begin with a 4-week summer intensive at UCSF
Students learn the science background that underlies the issue they are studying, principles of public health, survey research and data analysis, as well as marketing and messaging strategies while completing the early phases of their research.
  • Continue research during the school year
Following school year (junior year), students run a large research project to test the effectiveness of health messages they designed over the summer. Meet ~monthly.
  • Receive college guidance
Throughout the program, SF HI students will also work closely with a college counselor helping to ensure that SF HI participants are solidly on the path to college.
